Spiritual Growth starts & continues with regular Bible reading
When you read the Bible Adventure selections (or any selected passage of the Bible — a chapter, a few paragraphs, a full “book”) ask yourself the following questions. Writing your thoughts down in a notebook or a journal is a great way to understand and apply the truths of scripture to your life.
1) WHAT did you hear? 2) WHAT do you think?
3) WHAT will you do? 4) Now talk to God.
An option using these same scriptures involves reading and “SOAP” Journaling:
Step 1 = SCRIPTURE: Read the passage(s). Before reading your Bible, pray asking God to speak to your through the Holy Spirit and the Bible. Read with an open heart & Jesus will give you the words of encouragement, direction, correction & hope that you need. Practically, write down the date you read & the scripture “address.” Example: Monday 1/1/2015; John 3:1-36 (Address = book / chapter / verse). Then, write out the exact verse that speaks to you (writing it in your own handwriting helps the idea “stick” in your mind. (Example: John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”)
Step 2 = OBSERVATION: Reflect on what you have just read to understand what the Bible is actually saying. Write down what you understand from the Scripture to mean.
Step 3 = APPLICATION: Write down how you can apply this verse(s) to your life, i.e. In understanding this scripture passage, how does this affect me, challenge me, encourage me to be more life Jesus…to please God through my thoughts and actions? Write down how you will be seek to be more like Jesus because of what you have just read.
Step 4 = PRAYER: Write out a short prayer based on what you have read, asking God to direct you in thought & action to “do” what you have learned from your Bible reading today. How will I be different today/tomorrow because of what I have read?
